Getting Involved: DAR Chapter Service Opportunities
Genesee Chapter DAR continuously sponsors special events. This article highlights some which occur annually to remind us that DAR provides opportunities for service and involvement on a regular basis.
Every October the Genesee Chapter supports DAR’s National Day of Service. This day focuses on our local community. Recent projects included providing items to the local VA clinic to ensure cleaning supplies for homeless veterans as they transition into permanent housing. We also supply personal items for veterans at the local VA hospital and long-term care facility. Further, the Chapter provided clothing, personal items, and treats for those living in a local homeless shelter.
Every November, the Genesee Chapter holds a Chapter patriots remembrance program to highlight the members’ Patriot ancestors. This is an opportunity to remember their service and to learn more about the American Revolution.
Every January, the Chapter recognizes outstanding high school seniors through the Good Citizens program. The program focuses on the qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism. Each student applicant completes an essay on a preselected topic. The essays are sent to a panel of non-member judges who evaluate them. First, second, and third place winners receive a cash prize. Their essays are submitted to a state-wide competition for additional prizes and scholarships. All local student applicants are recognized at a Chapter event.
Throughout the year, members participate in DAR’s Project Patriot. They collect paperback books which are sent to active-duty military around the world.
In the fall and spring, State Chapter events occur. In April, the Chapter participates in State Awards Day, where awards are presented to local Chapters and Good Citizen essay winners are acknowledged. Both are wonderful experiences! In September, the Chapter attends State Conference. State Conference is a wonderful opportunity to learn about new service projects, make new friends, and meet State and National Officers.
