Our Founding

The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, (NSDAR or DAR), was established on October 11, 1890, during a renewed wave of patriotism and growing interest in the early history of the United States.

At that time, many women sought meaningful ways to honor the patriot ancestors who helped secure American independence. When existing hereditary societies did not provide that opportunity, a determined group of women in Washington, D.C., created one of their own.

From that beginning, the Daughters of the American Revolution has continued to promote patriotism, preserve history, and support education—carrying forward the spirit of those who made our nation possible.

Our Mission

From its very first meeting, the Daughters of the American Revolution has remained committed to the same guiding principles that continue to shape its work today.

Historical
We honor the lives, sacrifices, and enduring legacy of the men and women who secured American independence, ensuring their stories are remembered and shared with future generations.

Educational
Inspired by President George Washington’s call to promote the broad diffusion of knowledge, we support education and encourage the development of informed, engaged citizens.

Patriotic
We uphold and strengthen the ideals of freedom upon which our nation was founded, fostering love of country and respect for the institutions that protect our liberty.

Genesee Chapter, NSDAR

We proudly serve the Flint and surrounding communities in Genesee and Shiawassee Counties. We currently have over 100 members and are growing and thriving. Our chapter is active in our service to veterans, education, and promoting historic preservation.

Membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution offers women the opportunity to help educate our youth, preserve our past, and promote love of our country while making lifelong friendships.

How Do I Join DAR?

Any woman 18 years or older who can prove lineal, bloodline descent from an ancestor who aided in achieving American independence is eligible to join the DAR. She must provide documentation for each statement of birth, marriage, and death as well as of the Revolutionary War service of her Patriot ancestor.

DAR volunteers in chapters throughout the country can provide guidance and assistance with the application process. Admission to membership in the National Society is through a chapter or as a Member-At-Large. For more information contact:
